History

The ISCM was formed in 1974 by medically qualified microbiologists in clinical practice in Ireland on both sides of the border. It is recognised as a charity (CHY 13640) and uses its funds to promote the educational and professional activities of the Society.

Structure

A council of the society consisting of 3 ordinary members and 3 office bearers: President, Secretary/Treasurer and Meeting Secretary, administers the functions of the society.

Mission

Academic meetings are currently held twice a year in Spring in Dublin and in the Autumn outside Dublin. On occasions these are held jointly with other societies both in Ireland and Britain. Every third year the Autumn meeting is held jointly with the Societies of Wales and of Scotland as a pan Celtic Conference hosted in rotation between the 3 celtic nations. The Society also represents and promotes the views of its members in a wide variety of fora such as Comhairle na Hospiteal, the Department of Health, NDSC and a variety of British Bodies such as the Association of Medical Microbiologists.
