About the ISCM
The ISCM was formed in 1974 by medically qualified microbiologists in clinical practice in Ireland. It is recognised as a charity (CHY 13640) and uses its funds to promote the educational and professional activities of the Society.
Clinical Microbiologists work between the lab, the desk and the patient bedside to oversee the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection. If you are considering it as a career, and would like to know more about higher specialist training in clinical microbiology in Ireland, please click here.
Mission
The ISCM objectives are to advance and disseminate the scientific and clinical knowledge of infection including laboratory diagnosis, patient management and treatment, surveillance and epidemiology, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship and advisory consultation services.
Academic meetings are currently held twice a year in Spring and Autumn. On occasions these are held jointly with other societies both in Ireland and Britain. The Society is one of the affiliated societies of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The Society also represents and promotes the views of its members in a wide variety of fora such as the HSE, the Department of Health and Children, HIQA, HPSC, INAB and a variety of British bodies such as HIS and BSAC.
Council Members and Committees
A council of the society consisting of 3 office bearers: President, Secretary/Treasurer and Meeting Secretary, and 3 ordinary members administers the functions of the society.
